About the Remastering
Four engineers at Abbey Road Studios in London have remastered these historic EMI recordings from their original analogue sources for release in pristine hi-def. The process always starts with finding all of the records and tapes in EMI’s archive in London and comparing different sources and any previous CD reissues. We consult each recording’s job file, which contains notes about the recording made by the engineer and producer. For example, this sometimes explain why there is more than one set of tapes to choose from. Although most often associated with solo piano works, Frédéric Chopin also wrote two notoriously challenging piano concertos – and appeared as soloist at each premiere. Celebrated French pianist Elizabeth Sombart joins the London’s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra to perform Chopin’s First Concerto under the baton of Pierre Vallet. Elizabeth Sombart totally unique interpretation of the two famous and only Chopin’s concertos.

Chopin created a radically new musical language for the piano that was nevertheless strongly influenced by his love of the contemporary folk music from his native country that he was exiled from for the greater part of his creative life, Poland. The unique flavour of his expression was intimately connected to the longing he felt for a world that was vastly different in make-up and feeling from anywhere today, but the power and appeal of his compositions have long outlasted the demise of their environmental origins.

However, for the pianist and pedagogue Elizabeth Sombart, the founder of the specialised center Centre International d’Etude de la Pédagogie Résonnance (CIEPR) organised by the Fondation Résonnance, this very survival of Chopin and his particular popularity today presents a great challenge for the performer who lives in such a dissimilar ambience from the far more intimate atmosphere that Chopin evoked. Whereas of course the worlds of all the great 19th Century composers were completely different from life as it is today, for Madame Sombart the changed situation brings especially critical issues for the understanding and interpretation of Chopin’s music. The music of Chopin has been a lifelong preoccupation for Elizabeth Sombart not only as a performer but also as a pedagogue, and indeed the methodical and phenomenological teaching of piano style and technique in the works of a very wide range of composers has been a major part of her life for many years. She established the internationally operating Fondation Résonnance to give students not just a rigorous technical education but also a deep understanding of the broad-ranging expressive potential of the piano.

Especially in the case of Chopin’s music, for Elizabeth Sombart this means instilling a profound awareness of spatial and ephemeral elements – characteristics that she feels are particularly elusive to sense and realise in today’s world. As she points out, even the most meticulous application of processes aligning thought and feeling cannot guarantee the strangely evanescent magic that is so centrally inherent in the music of Chopin but is often so unattainable in performance. Environmental conditions, always a crucial factor in any artistic recreation, are maybe even more critical for the performance of Chopin’s oeuvre than most other composers’ in this respect, and that is a fundamental reason why Elizabeth Sombart has waited so long in her distinguished career before feeling able to make studio recordings of Chopin’s two Piano Concertos. For several decades Elizabeth Sombart has been specially admired by connoisseurs as a highly idiomatic interpreter of the challengingly demanding music of Chopin, but only now has she found the ideal conditions to conjure up the composer’s ephemeral, almost dream like world while playing with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in the literal environment of Abbey Road studios. Those conditions have materialised through discovering the conductor Pierre Vallet and the RPO who have been ideal partners in her task, achieving the precarious balance of fleeting freedom and faultless precision that Chopin’s music requires.

Escher String Quartet – Mendelssohn: String Quartets Nos. 1 & 4 (2015)
FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/96 kHz | Time – 80:10 minutes | 1,48 GB | Genre: Classical
Studio Master, Official Digital Download | Source: eClassical | Artwork: Covers & Digital booklet  |  @ BIS

Founded in 2005, the Escher String Quartet is still a young ensemble as string quartets go. It has nevertheless become established as one of the most exciting quartets around, both in its home country, the U.S.A., and elsewhere, recently being shortlisted for a BBC Music Magazine Award. With their début disc on BIS, the Eschers launch a three-disc cycle of Mendelssohn’s string quartets…

The Escher Quartet replaced their cellist last month, and it will be interesting to hear whether the new lineup will affect their sound in the rest of their Mendelssohn cycle – this is the first disc in a planned series of three. If it doesn’t, all to the good: as recorded here, the Eschers sound warm, relaxed and responsive to all of Mendelssohn’s expressive nuances. Based in New York, the quartet are former BBC New Generation Artists, and proteges of the Emersons. They lavish full, red-blooded tone on the slow movement of the genial Quartet No 1, and in the restless Quartet No 4 they keep the momentum striving forward, with first violinist Adam Barnett-Hart spinning long, seamless phrases. In the middle comes the unnumbered E flat major quartet, written when Mendelssohn was 14, and if it finds the composer aping his elders, it’s a proficient and at times inspired imitation that they would definitely have found flattering.

Tracklist:
01 – Quartet No.1 in E flat major, Op.12, MWV R25 (1829) – I. Adagio non troppo – Allegro non tardante
02 – Quartet No.1 in E flat major, Op.12, MWV R25 (1829) – II. Canzonetta. Allegretto

The Leipzig String Quartet offers fitting tribute to Joseph Haydn on the occasion of the two hundredth anniversary of his death with its own commemorative edition. Vol. 1 presents ‘The Seven Last Words of Christ’, a passion composition for orchestra from 1786 that a priest had ordered from Haydn for the traditional Good Friday ceremony in the little Chapel of Santa Cueva in Cadiz in southern Spain. Later Haydn himself arranged this work for string quartet.

Mahler’s final completed symphony provides both a fitting conclusion to Chailly’s highly acclaimed cycle and a valediction after his decade and a half at the helm of the magnificent Concertgebouw Orchestra. It was the last work Chailly conducted as the orchestra’s music director, and he made this disc directly after that final concert. The work’s four movements are an epic 90 minutes of tumultuous emotions dominated by the motif of Death (by the time Mahler began composing the work in 1909 he knew that he had only a short time to live). The two outer movements, each lasting roughly half an hour, are concerned with calm resignation and the agony of farewell; the two central movements, a gruesome Scherzo and a dissonant ‘Rondo-Burleske’, are ruled by the demonic element of Death.

The Ninth is generally reckoned to be the most difficult of all Mahler’s symphonies to bring off, equally demanding for the performers and for the listener, and Chailly’s realization is as gripping as it is disturbing. The balance and clarity of orchestral detail, from the frenzy of the Rondo to the almost imperceptible closing bars of the final Adagio, is brilliantly captured.

“The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra is one of the last [orchestras] to really have an immediately identifiable sound, and to arguably (to an extent) plumb the character of composers in the way an actor will with his roles.” –Gramophone

The recipient of the 2012 City of Leipzig Bach Medal, Masaaki Suzuki has earned an enviable reputation as an interpreter of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach – as a reviewer in International Record Guide has put it: ‘With Suzuki you can hear Bach’s heart beat’. To a wide audience he is known as the director of Bach Collegium Japan, and the moving force behind the ensemble’s acclaimed recordings of Bach’s complete sacred cantatas. Perhaps less well known is that he began his career – at the age of 12! – playing the organ at church services in Kobe, where he was born. Suzuki has remained true to the organ throughout his life, and for BIS he has previously recorded Bach’s German Organ Mass, as well as programmes of Buxtehude and Sweelinck. He here appears on a disc which combines some of Bach’s best-loved works for the instrument, including the D minor Toccata and Fugue, the Partitas on ‘O Gott, du frommer Gott’, BWV 767, the Canonic Variations, BWV 769, and the celebrated Prelude and Fugue in E minor, BWV 548. The recording was made in Groningen’s Martinikerk, with Suzuki performing on the renowned organ, one of the most important and impressive in the Netherlands.

The latest album from Michael Tilson Thomas and the GRAMMY Award-winning San Francisco Symphony features breathtaking live recordings from the SFS’ widely acclaimed American Mavericks festival. American Mavericks includes scintillating performances of four works by three influential twentieth century masters: Henry Cowell’s Synchrony and his Piano Concerto, Lou Harrison’s Concerto for Organ with Percussion Orchestra and Edgard Varese’s Ameriques and the orchestral siren that has influenced generations of composers.

Tilson Thomas and the San Franciscans were at their best in honoring the monuments of the maverick tradition… Other orchestras hardly touch this music, but in San Francisco it has become standard fare, and the authority of the playing was staggering. — Alex Ross, The New Yorker

Studio Master, Official Digital Download | Source: Qobuz | @ Muso
Recorded: at the Eglise Sainte-Madeleine in Strasbourg (France) from 31 July to 3 August 2014

Stéphanie Paulet once more scores a hit with this project that reveals the flourishing violin activity in the late 17th century to the North of the Alps. Accompanied by a ‘positive’ organ of exceptional sound quality, her violin sings, leaps and makes us vibrate through the aural beauty of this disc, enhanced as it is by quite simply magnificent sound engineering.

Recorded: October 2009 at Sendesaal des Hessischen Rundfunks, Frankfurt

For all practical purposes, Morton Feldman’s Violin and Orchestra resembles an anti-concerto, insofar as the soloist’s role is minimized and frequently buried within the heavy textures of the orchestra, rather than featured prominently before it. The violin part consists almost entirely of static, minimal gestures, and short groups of pitches, offering neither displays of technical virtuosity nor soaring melodies in the manner of traditional concertos. Yet despite its apparent lack of any themes and severely restricted activity, it is nonetheless the focus of this piece, and Feldman’s thick and often dark orchestral textures are given a rarefied quality through the violin’s fluctuating presence. Violinist Carolin Widmann demonstrates great stamina and patience in this 50-minute work, and it seems to hang together largely through the strength of her playing. The Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, led by Emilio Pomàrico, produces a full, rich sound and seems well-rehearsed, though Feldman’s writing is desultory and disconnected from the violin part, so there is a kind of built-in looseness that will frustrate the goal-oriented listener. However, this piece is like many other compositions by Feldman, requiring suspension of expectations to let it flow by and create its fleeting impressions. ECM’s reproduction is clear and palpably close, so everything can be heard clearly at a high enough volume, though because this is a Feldman work, a low setting might contribute to its effectiveness. –AllMusic Review by Blair Sanderson

The sonatas on this album are considered to be harder than most Mozart piano sonatas because they present a few more technical challenges, such as ornaments at the beginning of the melody or contrapuntal entrances of the theme, than his other sonatas. Alfred Brendel makes these challenges sound oh-so-easy and natural. His is a graceful Mozart with many detailed shadings, despite his occasionally playing with more forcefulness than is necessary and not as subtly as it could be. The opening of the Sonata in E flat, K. 282, and the Fantasia, K. 396, have similarities in their slow, meandering, but not random, temperaments. Brendel gives the minuets of the E flat sonata more idiosyncratic humor than one expects of a stately dance. The Sonata in D major, K. 576, is particularly elegant. He doesn’t make too much of the hunting call at the very beginning of the first movement’s main theme, but keeps it in proportion with the rest of the theme, and he handles all the contrapuntal entrances of that same theme as if they were part of a full-fledged fugue. Brendel recognizes the Classical refinements of Mozart’s sonatas and combines those with a little coloring to give them more depth and character. –AllMusic Review by Patsy Morita

The Scottish Chamber Orchestra has established impeccable Mozartian credentials and its previous forays into operatic repertoire have been highly critically acclaimed. Conductor Christian Baldini makes his recording debut with the orchestra in this repertoire that is so close to his heart. They are joined for the arias by award-winning soprano Elizabeth Watts who uses her considerable Mozart experience to create highly memorable performances.

This 2015 audiophile release on Linn Records features soprano Elizabeth Watts in celebrated arias from the operas of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, along with overtures from the same operas, performed by Christian Baldini and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. For newcomers to Mozart, this program will be a delightful introduction, not only because the overtures will be recognizable in many cases, but the arias will give these listeners a generous sampling of the vocal styles found in each work. Aficionados of the operas will find this hybrid SACD appealing for the opportunity to hear Watts, who is better known for her recordings of Romantic lieder. Her bright and flexible voice is wonderful in Mozart, and the clarity of her diction makes her singing easy to follow, though the booklet provides the texts with translations. The orchestra plays modern instruments, though it often sounds like a period ensemble, due to the clean string playing and the distinctive tone colors of the woodwinds and brass. This disc invites repeated listening and is highly recommended. –Blair Sanderson, AllMusic

Although it is not one of Mozart’s most famous piano concertos, K. 271 in E-Flat is one of his most extraordinary. It is in many ways the first great piano concerto, in the modern sense of the term, and Mozart was just 21 when he wrote it. Melodically rich and full of imaginative touches — like the gorgeous, gentle minuet that lies in the middle of the rollicking finale — the concerto is already vintage Mozart. Ironically, though, it takes musicians of real sagacity to realize its youthful charm. Alfred Brendel, now in his 70s, does not sparkle in this work as he did on his previous recordings, but there is a quiet beauty to his playing now that seems absolutely right. And while he has pared down his sound, there is even more color and subtlety of shading than before. This sensitivity is even more apparent in the C Major Concerto, K. 503, a work bursting with brilliant pageantry. Brendel seems uninterested in the orchestra’s pomp, etching out his part with lyrical dignity — a touching and dramatic effect. Sir Charles Mackerras is a superb partner, and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra plays with heart. Not your usual Mozart, then, and all the better for it.

‘Bet I’m not the only one who had long thought the nickname for the K271 piano concerto written by the 21-year-old Mozart referred to it having been penned by the “young man” genius. When in fact it was the actual last name of a female French pianist for whom Mozart wrote the concerto! Being so early in his ouvre, this concerto has been recorded previously on the harpsichord, which is my personal preference. But Brendel does a fine job of delivering the delicate passages as well as making use of the piano’s greater emotional range in the unusual and extensive ten-minute long Rondo-Finale. This is the only one of his concertos in which Mozart allows the piano soloist to introduce the opening theme of the first movement. No. 25 is of course a more virtuosic work, and both concertos have extensive improvised cadenzas. The piano/orchestral balance is just right. I found these among the most enjoyable Mozart piano concerto recordings I have ever auditioned.’ –John Sunier, Audiophile Audition

‘Brendel’s Mozart has an instinctive rightness and authority rare among pianists of any era. Compared with his Seventies recordings, with Marriner and the ASMF, these new performances are that much more reflective, the tone often leaner but even more subtly coloured than before.’ –BBC Music Magazine
